Ontario Joint Health & Safety Certification ~ Refresher

JHSC Refresher is a One (1) Day program delivered by Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) Approved Providers.  This is required every three (3) years to maintain your JHSC Certification

Ontario Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

WHMIS has been around since 1988  

A significant revision took place in 2015 where components of WHMIS were aligned with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) that originated in Europe.  


WHMIS applies in a Workplace when Hazardous Materials are being used and/or stored


Every Employee in Canada needs WHMIS 

(each Province has their own program)


WHMIS must be reviewed at-least annually

  • Ontario WHMIS Regulation 860/80, Sec. 6 & 7
  • Federally in the Canada OH&S Regulations, Sec. 10.14

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)

TDG has been around since 1980  

Revisions/Amendments take place annually.

The Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) has proposed a change where TDG training would include a job-specific Practical Evaluation: as-of March 2024, this is not-yet in-force  


TDG applies when Hazardous Materials are shipped: Road, Rail, Marine & Air


TDG Retraining for Road, Rail & Marine is every three (3) years: Air is every two (2) years (separate course: currently unavailable)

Materials Handling Equipment (MHE) ~ Forklift

There are several versions of MHE Training depending on Class of MHE Equipment: there are 9 Classes of MHE Equipment


Training consists of both Theory and Practical Evaluation


Anyone who operates any Class of MHE Equipment must be trained: re-training is every three (3) years

  • Canada OH&S Regulations, Sec. 14.23 & 14.24


Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) ~ Aerial Platform

There are 6 Classes of MEWP Equipment


Training consists of both Theory and Practical Evaluation


Anyone who operates any Class of MEWP Equipment must be trained: re-training is every five (5) years

  • Ontario Construction Projects Regulation 213/91, Sec. 143 to 149
  • Canada OH&S Regulations, Sec. 14.23 & 14.24

Confined Space Awareness

Confined Spaces are potentially deadly!

Great care must be taken when working in these spaces: you must have an Air Quality Monitoring System, an On-Site Rescue Plan, you must use a Permit System


There are four (4) groups of people involved in Confined Space work:

  • Attendant / Spotter
  • Entrant
  • Supervisor
  • Rescuer (depending on rescue method chosen)


Training is conducted up-to the point-of-entry: no actual entry will take place, unless a training mannequin is provided

  • Canada OH&S Regulation, Part 11 

Lockout / Tagout

Lockout / Tagout means to physically apply a locking device to a piece of equipment and hold/secure it in the Off position, while work is being performed on the equipment: a Tag must accompany a lock, to identify the person who Locked Out the equipment and why


There are two (2) types of Lockout:

  • Individual Lockout
  • Group Lockout


You'll find the requirements for Lockout / Tagout training in:

  • Ontario Industrial Regulation 851/90, Sec. 42 & 42.1
  • Ontario Confined Space Regulation 632/05, Sec. 14
  • Ontario Construction Projects Regulation 213/91, Sec. 183, 186, & 190 to 194

Ontario Working At Heights (WAH) ~ CPO Approved

WAH has been around since 2015  

after a very specific accident where 4 Workers lost their lives, and one Worker was left Critically Injured!  


WAH is a One (1) Day program delivered by Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) Approved Providers.


WAH applies when working above 3m although there are other circumstances where protection is still required. 


WAH must be refreshed every three (3) years

  • Federally: fall Protection is found in the Canada OH&S Regulations, Sec. 12.06 to 12.09

Emergency First Aid

Emergency First Aid


 Basic one-day course offering lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace or home.  Course meets legislation requirements for Provincial/Territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines 


Course Includes:

  • The Red Cross
  • Preparing to respond
  • The EMS system
  • Check, Call, Care
  • Airway emergencies
  • Breathing and Circulation emergencies
  • First aid for respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Wound care

  • Canada OH&S Regulation, Part 16

Standard First Aid

Standard First Aid


 Comprehensive two-day course offering first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home.  Course meets legislation requirements for Provincial/Territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines 


Course Includes:

  • The Red Cross
  • Preparing to respond
  • The EMS system
  • Check, Call, Care
  • Airway emergencies
  • Breathing and Circulation emergencies
  • First aid for respiratory and cardiac arrest

Work Area Protection / Book 7

WAP / Book 7 Training provides technical training for roadway personnel to safely construct and manage a temporary traffic control Work Zone, allowing for the safe movement of all traffic including Public Motorists / Pedestrians / Cyclists, Emergency Vehicles & Work Equipment 


This course is designed to be engaging and experiential, with hands-on activities that represent real-life scenarios in a roadway Work Zone 


You'll find the requirements for training in:

  • OTM Book 7 Office Edition, Sec. 1.1, 1.3, 2.2, 3.1, 4.4, A1 & A3
  • Ontario Regulation 213/91, Sec. 67 through 69.1: Traffic Control


This training is not directly cited in the Canada OH&S Regulations 


Traffic Control Person: TCP (related to Book 7)

 Traffic Control Persons play an essential role in all roadway construction projects by helping keep drivers, roadway users and construction crews safe


The TCP program teaches roadway personnel how to provide safe passage of traffic through and around temporary traffic control Work Zones


This course is essential for workers required to conduct TCP operations as a part of their job duties: TCP's may also assist with Work Zone set-up & tear-down


You'll find the requirements for training in:

  • OTM Book 7 Office Edition, Sec. 1.1, 1.3, 2.2, 3.1, 4.4, A1 & A3
  • Ontario Regulation 213/91, Sec. 67 through 69.1: Traffic Control

Trench Safety

Hoisting & Rigging

Trenching Safety is essential for anyone working in Trenches, those who plan Trench work, and anyone acting as a Spotter / Emergency Responder for Trench Workers


Contrary to some beliefs: Trenches are not considered to be Confined Spaces, however, a well-thought-out Emergency Plan must be in place


Course Contents Include:

Hoisting & Rigging

Hoisting & Rigging

 Hoist and Rigging Safety Training addresses the safe operation of hoists in the work environment.  Training includes the basic precautions of Hoist use, and common workplace hazards

Heavy Equipment Operation

Heavy equipment operator training educates students to operate bulldozers, tractor loader backhoes, hydraulic escalators and other heavy equipment

Chainsaw Safety

 Participants will acquire the knowledge and basic skills to handle a chainsaw safely, fell trees properly and adopt safe practices 


This course will teach you proper chainsaw use, maintenance and sharpening, and safety techniques for chainsaw handling


A practical component is included in the course
